UI/UX…

Let’s go!

Spent a few conflicting months/years between thinking about joining the UIUX flock while juggling my full time, part time job AND student lifestyle. It definitely took me a while to get here, then COVID said yeah…maybe now’s it. I’m so happy to be here now.

My first insight of UI/UX was on my twitter account, a black tweeter (that’s important) must have tweeted a time-lapse mock up of an app he had done. It looked so hard yet so easy? I didn’t know what profession this would come under and my experience with computer science made me feel like it was more enjoyable then making a pc print “hello world”. It’s was a blend of creativity and structure, I could instantly see myself doing this.

I’ve loved D&T all my life, and truthfully if there was 1 subject I’d redo the course work for — it has to be my gcse design tech portfolio.

I accidentally studied an Art and Design subject at A-Levels and I knew from the first lesson it wasn’t for me, from when the teacher said in the first few lessons to just create and told me off for planning my structure, I lost it mentally. It’s not to say I can’t think on the spot but I do love structure and some sort of order. I think that was the easiest way to differentiate D&T and Art and Design subjects; the latter was just vibes.

Regardless I have always been looking for a course that meets in the middle, creativity but with sense or order. I thought maybe architecture and did some experience and realised it wasn’t that (7 years!?) then product design (the draw a 3D car industrial type, didn’t even talk about how UI is PD). The words “user interface & experience” were forbidden by all local uni prospectus’ from what I could see.

Regardless of the rumbling and extremely brief backstory to how I got here, after a few YouTube videos and encouragement I finally jumped on Figma, opened a new twitter account [@1ITADESIGNS] and dedicated it to tech. As of right now it’s all about self teaching and to soon feel like I’ve earned the Junior UI/UX designer title.

That’s the end of my first blog post! Feel free to connect with me on my LinkedIn & Twitter accounts and I’ll find you there.
